Conventional optical resonator chemical sensors exhibit spectral shift in response to the change in refractive index or optical path length of the resonators, which is typically triggered by the adsorption of the analyte molecules onto the surface of the resonator matrix. Here, we develop a nanoporous spherical polymeric optical resonator featuring excellent sensitivity toward volatile organic compounds by virtue of the adsorption of the analyte molecules into the deep inside of the resonator matrix through the nanopores. This novel analyte capturing mechanism allows the detection of trace amount of chemicals at ppm concentration ranges.
