The behavior of the charge carrier in organic semiconductor (OSC) has been an open question for decades. In most cases, charge carrier is thought to be localized on a single molecule and incoherently transported by the hopping mechanism. However, in OSCs with high charge carrier mobility, the charge carrier delocalizes and is coherently transported by the band-like mechanism.
Here, we determined the charge carrier radius through the lens of electronic polarization C60, CuPc, and pentacene. We found that all of the charge carriers localized around a single molecule. Furthermore, by changing the temperature, C60, CuPc, and flat-lying pentacene show an incoherent hopping transport while pentacene in its thin-film phase, shows a band-like transport. Thus, we concluded that, by judging from the electronic polarization, the charge is localized in a single molecule and the localized charge also has a tendency to transport coherently.
