▲ [12p-N405-2] Visualization of phase array effect in a terahertz radiation pattern from the semiconductor surface in free space
Keywords:Phase array effect in terahertz emission, THz dipoles, FDTD simulation
Terahertz (THz) emission from a semiconductor surface under femtosecond excitation is crucial due to the high demand of spatial resolution for THz imaging and THz time-domain spectroscopy in near-field and far-field techniques. [1] However, the coupling efficiency of THz radiation out from semiconductors is highly dependent on the orientation of THz dipole in semiconductors, [2] which further deteriorates due to the phase array effect of THz radiation from the semiconductor surface. Therefore, visualization of the phase array effect can greatly help in evaluating the maximum potential of THz emission propagation dynamics in free space. In this study, we used finite-difference time-domain method (Ansys Lumerical FDTD: Ansys, Inc.) to visualize the far-field THz radiation pattern propagation in free space from the semiconductor surface. Our simulation results show that the phase array effect is highly dependent on the beam width and the angles of excitation and detection.
