Keywords:Nanobubble, Bactericidal activity, reactive oxygen species
The bactericidal effect of nanobubbles containing three different gases, CO2, O2, and N2, was investigated using E. coli as a model bacterium. The bacterial survival rate was found to be significantly reduced when exposed to NBs containing CO2. No significant bactericidal effect was observed when exposed to NB containing oxygen or nitrogen gas. The generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the NB suspensions was investigated by electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR). It was found that the dominant species of ROS generated in the NB suspensions was hydroxyl radical.
