[17a-Z08-2] Measurement of fiber local-birefringence fluctuation for external stress

We have been investigating a technique for measuring the local birefringence of an optical fiber by detecting the in-phase (I) and orthogonal (Q) components of Rayleigh backscattered light by coherent heterodyne detection. In this paper, we report the result of direct observation of instantaneous phase variation due to local stress application by applying DC voltage to a certain point of the optical fiber and measuring the I and Q components of backscattered light.
