Keywords:blue light, phototoxicity, proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA)

We have been studying the effects of short wavelength visible light on living cells using live cell imaging technique. We have shown the wavelength dependence of phototoxicity by observing the dynamics of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) after irradiation with laser light of two wavelengths, 375 and 405 nm, at intensities from 1.5 µW to 4.5 µW. In the present study, we examined the dynamics of PCNA under a wider range of irradiation intensities and cell viability under the same conditions, and showed that the mechanisms of DNA damage and repair may differ between the two wavelengths. The mechanism of DNA damage and repair may differ between the two wavelengths.
