We propose read sensors for hard disk drives (HDDs) using anomalous Hall effect (AHE). The AHE reader will enable us to reduce the reader’s physical dimension to ~10 nm scale, which is necessary for the future ultrahigh density HDDs. Our estimation of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) indicates that AHE reader with a high AHE material, such as Heusler alloys, may achieve a significant advantage of SNR compared to tunnel magnetoresistance reader. We will discuss issues for the AHE reader based on finite element method simulations.
