Cellulose oligomers with azido groups at the reducing end were synthesized by cellodextrin phosphorylase (CDP) using 1-azido-β-glucopyranoside as a primer. Cellulose II microcrystals obtained by a recrystallization of CDP synthesized cellulose were dispersed in PVA solution, and the suspension was dried under static magnetic fields of 0 and 8 T to prepare random and oriented films. In the oriented films, the cellulose II microcrystals were oriented as those long axes, i.e., the [1 1 0] of cellulose II crystals, parallel to the magnetic field. The elastic modulus and tensile strength of the random films were higher but fracture strain significantly lower than those of PVA films. When tensile strain was applied to the magnetic field direction of the oriented films, the elastic modulus and fracture strain became 10% higher than those of the random films. These results indicated that there was a certain reinforcing effect even when the strain was applied laterally to the cellulose II microcrystals.
