The purpose of this study is to establish a magnetic separation and condensation technique for the recycling of rare earth metals. A condensation measurement system was constructed to apply a magnetic field to a low-concentration aqueous solution of rare-earth ions and to observe the concentration change of the ions optically in-situ without contact using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The behavior of magnetic condensation was confirmed from the changes in the interference fringes. The degree of magnetic force corresponded to the degree of concentration change. We also found the fact that the concentration was not monotonically increasing. We estimated the cause of this phenomenon to be convection or diffusion by gravity through experiments in which the position of the magnet was changed from the top, side, and bottom of the cell. In the presentation, the dependence of the condensation behavior on the initial concentration and the equilibrium state after a sufficient time has passed will also be reported.
