For constructing a low-energy consuming, carbon-neutral, sustainable society, we have developed innovative thermal devices: thermal diodes, heat flow switches, and thermoelectric generators. The guiding principles for enhancing their performance were constructed on the basis of investigations into the electronic structure, electron scattering, phonon dispersion, and phonon scattering of target materials, and the trial devices were constructed for evaluating the validity of the guiding principles. Detailed information about the necessity of improving the performance of each device is explained with the results recently observed for the developed devices.
