The polarization induced in a material by the electric field of light contains information about the excited state of electrons and is a physical quantity that plays a central role in the interaction between light and matter. We have been investigating a new concept of optical microscopy (photoinduced force microscopy), which detects the dipole-dipole interaction between the dipole induced by light irradiation of a material surface and the dipole induced by the metal tip of an atomic force microscope as a force. Here, we introduce the recent development of this photo-induced force microscopy.
