Membrane proteins play a fundamental role in biological activities of cell membranes. We have been developing an artificial cell membrane platform that mimics biological cell membranes, and have reported various behaviors of ion channel proteins. However, it has been difficult to understand the gating mechanisms of the ion channels using conventional electrophysiological methods alone. In this study, we report a novel experimental system that combines conventional electrophysiological measurements with voltage-sensitive-dye-based fluorescence imaging methods. This system would provide more information to help understand the mechanism of ion channels.
