Keywords:electron excitation, elliptic polarization, analytical theory

We have developed analytically theory and numerically model the probability of laser-induced electronic excitation of diamond, and investigated the dependence of the polarization on the ellipticity. As a result, we found that the excitation probability of elliptically and circularly polarized light is much lower than that of linearly polarized light. However, considering the anisotropy of the band structure, the energy oscillation caused by the intra-band electron dynamics significantly changes the excitation probability, and the excitation probability of circularly polarized light becomes larger depending on the material. This result qualitatively explains the previously reported experiments and provides a guideline for controlling the laser excitation process.
