We study the projectile dependence of biomolecular damage caused by MeV ion beams. A target of uridine monophosphate (UMP) with a nucleotide structure was irradiated with various ion beams of helium, carbon, or oxygen ions in the MeV region. Positive secondary ions emitted from the target were measured. We determined the damaged part of the nucleotide molecule from the secondary ion mass spectrum. It was found that the damage of the phosphate group in the UMP becomes more remarkable as the incident ion becomes a heavy ion.
