A method to detect target molecules expressed on non-adherent cell surfaces, such as blood cells, by using highly sensitive electrochemiluminescence (ECL)-based measurements was developed. Cup-shaped microelectrodes whose diameters were almost same as that of cells were fabricated, target cells labeled with ECL probes were captured to inner concave of the cups, and then electric voltage was applied. In results, target molecules on the cell surfaces can be detected by the ECL-based measurements.
