The liquid crystal display (LCD) was published in 1986 and I started the research of the liquid crystal two years later. At that time, the liquid crystal property was almost unexplored, so that I started with research on the basic physical properties of the liquid crystal, and especially analyzed mechanism and control the liquid crystal molecular alignment. As the results, foundation of the LCD properties has been clarified. In parallel with this, the viewing angle and response speed of the LCD have been improved to achieve higher functionality. Furthermore, full-color LCDs were realized, and color liquid crystal televisions and computers appeared and became widespread.
