Understanding interfacial phenomena is important because reactions at the electrode/electrolyte interface of a battery are strongly related to the improvement or degradation of cycling characteristics. Electrochemical AFM, which combines AFM, one of the microanalysis methods for solid/liquid interfaces, and an electrochemical control system, enables interface analysis in an electrochemical environment. A battery consists of three components: electrolyte, cathode, and anode, and simultaneous analysis of the interface between the two electrodes is desirable. We report on the development of a compact AFM for the development of a multi-probe electrochemical AFM.
