Soils comprised of particulate grains exhibit inherent anisotropy during deposition process due to complicated shapes of soil grains. In general, soils are consolidated under an anisotropic stress state, showing a degree of stress-induced anisotropy. In-situ elastic wave survey is often conducted to evaluate soil stiffnesses at small-strain levels; however, the effect of anisotropy has not been fully understood. In the laboratory, it is not easy to measure elastic wave velocities accurately and quantify the degree of inherent anisotropy. This study performs discrete element method simulations to understand fundamentals of effect of anisotropy on multi-directional wave velocities.
