[II-168] A study on analysis of river channel characteristics - Prevention of disasters again by countermeasures for bipolarization of river channels -

〇Kazuaki Horioka1 (1.Docon Corporation)

Keywords:embankment collapse, analysis of river channel characteristics, bipolarization of river channels, long-term rainfall, critical Reynolds number, drag coefficient drop

Issues and lessons regarding the analysis of river channel characteristics were examined for the embankment collapse caused by Typhoon 19 in 2019.

The main causes of the embankment collapse are insufficient embankment height and insufficient running water cross section, but the other cause is that the river channel has been bipolarized and riverbank scouring and erosion has progressed, leading to flow of water toward the bank.

Bipolarization is a mechanism that causes a slow flow on the opposite river bank when high-speed currents occur on continuous seawalls or eroded river banks.

The countermeasure against bipolarization is to add appropriate unevenness to the river bank.
