Keywords: Embankment stability, Stepped Embankment, Scouring

Overtopping high velocity flow of embankment, attacks as a jet on the downstream causing scouring to occur. Experiments were conducted using smooth slope (SS) and horizontal stepped slope (HSS) embankments models. The investigated HSS embankment model showed a skimming flow structure. It was observed that in the condition of the HSS the initial scouring rate was lesser compared to the SS type. A stepped slope embankment (HSS), compared to smooth slope embankment (SS), reduced the scoured depth (SD) around 3.4%-5.9% and scoured length (SL) around 3.8%-9.8%.
