Welcome to the 56th Annual Meeting of JSDB in Sendai!

On behalf of the meeting organizing committee, I am pleased to announce that the 56th annual meeting of the Japanese Society of Developmental Biologists (JSDB) will be held from July 22 to July 25, 2023 in Sendai.

The organizing committee welcomes you all, and we will provide good opportunities for participants to present their research. Along the long history of developmental biology, it has been always important to explore novel and significant phenomenon and their mechanisms of development of various organisms. I hope that this meeting will provide you a clue to find a future direction of your research. Because active discussion among participants should be crucial for further advance of developmental biology, I hope that many students as well as researchers meet and interact in Sendai.

In the Annual Meeting of JSDB, English has been a common language, and we asked you all presentation in English. Meanwhile, as the result of a questionnaire survey to the JSDB member, we found that a majority of the member prefers an English-Japanese hybrid meeting. In view of general importance of English presentation and discussion in scientific meetings, JSDB continues to recommend you to give a talk and discuss in English, but we would allow you to talk and discuss in Japanese in the oral sessions as a trial in the Sendai meeting to facilitate in-depth discussion and presentation by students. In the symposium, we would ask you both talk and discussion in English as is. 

At July, 2022, pandemic outbreak of COVID19 is resumed, but hopefully soon ends. I am eager an active onsite-meeting, but in the case when the infection will still spread in next year, I will let you know our policy of the 2023 metting. Sendai is a beautiful city, and good for eating and drinking. I hopefully enjoy them with you in Sendai.

このたび、日本発生生物学会第56回年会を2023年7月22日（土）から7月25日（火）の予定で、仙台国際センターを会場として開催する運びとなりました。

さまざまな生物で見られる重要な現象と、その新たな分子機構を探求することにより、発生生物学のこれからの方向性が見えてくると思います。今回の大会で、学生を含む多くの参加者が活発に議論することを通して、それぞれの研究の今後の展開のヒントが得られ、発生生物学がますます発展する足がかりとなることを期待します。

昨年、発生学会会員へのアンケートを行った結果、従来、英語での発表と質疑で行ってきた大会を、日本語も可能とするご希望が多く寄せられました。発生学会としましては、国際化の観点から英語を使用言語の基本とする方針に変更はなく、英語での発表と質疑を推奨しますが、仙台大会では会員の意向を踏まえて、試行的に一般口頭発表は日本語での発表と質疑も可能といたします。それにより、より活発な討議と、学生による積極的な発表を期待します。シンポジウムは、これまで通り、英語での発表と質疑をお願いします。

新型コロナウイルス感染症は、2022年7月の段階で再度、広がりを見せておりますが、今後収束し、仙台大会は何も制限のない従来通りの形で開催できることを願っております。会場の仙台国際センターに隣接して、新たに緑地公園が整備されており、空き時間には気持ちの良いひとときを過ごせるのではないかと思います。また牛タン、海鮮や、おいしいお酒を、多くの人と楽しむことができればと思います。来年の開催時期に、もし感染が再拡大している場合には、開催の方針を改めてお知らせしたいと思います。2023年7月に仙台で皆様とお会いできることを楽しみしております。
