【Purpose】

Although some studies have reported preoperative quadriceps strength associates postoperative quadriceps strength recovery after anterior cruciate ligament(ACL)reconstruction with hamstrings tendon autograft, there are no studies investigating about postoperative quadriceps strength recovery after grouping by preoperative quadriceps strength. The purpose of this study was to assess postoperative quadriceps strength recovery after ACL reconstruction with hamstrings tendon autograft in male and female, stratified preoperative quadriceps strength.

【Methods】

Isokinetic quadriceps strength at 60°/s was measured at preoperatively, 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery in 393 patients(194 males and 199 females)underwent ACL reconstruction with hamstrings tendon autograft. Quadriceps strength index(QSI)was calculated by normalizing the peak toque of the involved leg with the uninvolved leg. The subjects were stratified by sex and preoperative QSI(<60% group, 60-80% group, ≥80% group). A three(group)× three(time)analysis of variance with repeated-measures and Tukey post hoc tests were performed to evaluate postoperative QSI recover after surgery in male and female.

【Results】

Interaction effect was not observed(male:p=0.29, female:p=0.28)but main effect of time(male:p<0.0001, female:p<0.0001)and preoperative QSI group(male:p<0.0001, female:p<0.0001)were observed. In both male and female, 60-80% group and ≥80% group were significantly higher QSI than<60% group at 3 and 6 months after surgery. In addition, ≥80% group was significantly higher QSI than <60% group at 12 months after surgery in male and female.

【Discussion】

This study shows postoperative QSI recovery data in each group stratified by sex and preoperative QSI and suggests that preoperative QSI affects postoperative QSI after ACL reconstruction with hamstrings tendon autograft.
