[1C-02] Revisiting the typographic picture
focusing on their use as visual aids in instructional materials for BASIC English

This study rethinks Isotype and contemporaneous visual representations as 'typographic picture' with the aim of re-evaluating the characteristics of symbols that have historically been excluded from modern standardized pictograms. The term is embedded in Isotype, with the implication that symbols representing the same meaning should use isomorphic forms, such as type. However, the typical use of typographic picture is composite picture, which in practice varies slightly from case to case. This study focuses on the typographic picture of visual aids in Basic English and shed light on the uniqueness in typographic pictures, which are different from contemporary pictograms, including not only isotypes but also the work of Rudolf Modley.
