[5B-04] Verification experiment of proposed improvements using design guidelines for Open Course Ware

The growing demand for online learning has attracted attention to open courseware (OCW) and the need for research focused on the quality of such courses. Although the demand for OCW is growing worldwide, the OCW usage rate in Japan is still low and little research has been conducted on the quality of design of OCWs. In a previous study by the author and others, we divided OCW design into two aspects, usability design and instructional design. We examined four internationally and domestically recognized online learning sites as case studies and found that the usability of online learning sites, such as OCWs, improves the efficiency of exploration and the quality of design. We proposed a draft design guideline for smooth learning. We verified the effectiveness of the proposed design guidelines, by creating a web page prototype (improvement plan) based on the proposed guidelines. We used a well-known domestic OCW site (Hokkaido University OCW) as an example, and conducted a comparison verification experiment with an existing site to evaluate its effectiveness and degree of improvement.
