[6B-01] Interior Design and Gender in Postwar Japan

Through the Transformation of Practice and Consciousness around Self-made Interiors

This presentation will focus on Japanese self-made interior designs from the late 20th century to the present. Based on the results of previous studies, I will clarify the situation in which more and more people enjoy DIY since the 1990s, as both men and women have become increasingly interested in interior design.
The results of surveys revealed that in the process of generating a craft-oriented design culture inherited from the age of counterculture, it spread beyond the previous gender framework regarding handmade.
