[1Ip05] Significant enhancement of current noise in carbon nanotube with finite length

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are potential candidates for use in nanoelectronics due to their excellent electrical and mechanical properties. In high-frequency device applications, it is essential to understand and control not only the averaged current characteristics, such as impedance, but also the current fluctuations, such as shot noise. In this study, we developed a new simulation method to calculate the time-dependent current flowing through nanoscale objects and applied it to inelastic electronic transport in CNTs at finite temperature. We find that the current fluctuation strongly depends on the tube length and exhibits the maximum when the tube length is comparable to the mean free path of the electron. This new finding can be understood in terms of quantum scattering theory combined with Büttiker's fictitious probe method.
