[2P44] Electronic structure and electrical transport properties of Yb-intercalated epitaxial graphene

The atomic intercalation into graphene changes its electronic band structures and results in various modulations of physical properties. Recently, we successfully observe the superconductivity of Yb-intercalated graphene for the first time by in situ electrical transport measurements in UHV. The sample was prepared by depositing Yb on a few-layer epitaxial graphene on SiC(0001) and annealing it. The Yb intercalation induced the √3×√3 superstructure confirmed by RHEED. The superconducting transition temperatures of TConset and TCzero were 1.65 K and 0.85 K, respectively. By ARPES measurements, the Yb-intercalation causes electron doping to graphene, which makes bands shift ~ 0.5 eV downward. Yb-4f states hybridize to the π band of graphene, and the gap at the Dirac point seems to open probably due to strong SOI. If the electrons have the properties of 4f electron systems by hybridization, superconductivity may have novel properties similar to heavy Fermion superconductivity.
