Seawater has been reported to depress molybdenum floatability at alkaline conditions in copper-molybdenum (Cu-Mo) ore flotation circuits due to the formation of seawater precipitates that might affect the bubble-particle interactions. This work investigated the bubble interactions with single mineral of molybdenite and chalcopyrite in seawater. The stability of the intervening liquid layer between the bubble and the mineral surface is reported in this study. It was found that the bubble could displace the intervening liquid layer and formed a three-phase contact (TPC) more rapidly in seawater compared with that of in ultra-pure water at natural pH of both solutions. This phenomenon might be caused by the effect of seawater on the compression of electrical double layer which reduces the repulsive force between the bubble and the mineral surfaces, thus destabilizes the intervening liquid layer.
