In mining and tunneling engineering, the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of rock breakage are critically dependent on the performance of excavation tools such as cutting picks, disc cutters, and drilling bits. Evaluating and estimating the durability and effectiveness of these tools are essential, yet traditional cutting and drilling tests require large-scale machinery, significant time, and effort. In this study, edge chipping tests were conducted as a viable alternative for efficiently estimating the force and energy involved in rock cutting. In the test, a bit was penetrated into a Tage tuff block near its side surface to chip off a rock piece. The effects of different bit types were examined—specifically, two button bits (6 mm and 12 mm in diameter) and a point attack pick—across seven cutting distances from the side surface. Peak force, penetration depth, consumed energy, and specific energy were analyzed, and the relations with the bit types and cutting distances were clarified. The results provide valuable insights for the design and optimization of rock cutting machines, potentially enhancing their performance and cost-efficiency.
