The global shift toward electric vehicle (EVs) has significantly increased the demand for the nickel, especially for battery applications. Indonesia hosting approximately 55 million tons of laterite ore reserves and positioned as strategic supplier of nickel. Among various hydrometallurgical approaches, atmospheric leaching (AL) offers a simpler and cost effective for extracting nickel from laterite ore. This experiment investigates and compares the nickel recovery performance of roasted and unroasted Indonesian limonitic laterite ore using atmospheric leaching with sulfuric acid. The experimental setup, the laterite ore is divided into two groups: roasted ore (roasting in 600°C for 1 hour) and unroasted ore. Leaching was conducted using sulfuric acid at 0 M to 2 M concentration with time variations from 1 to 3 hours with 30 minutes increments, leaching temperature at 80°C with 10% pulp density. The extraction of nickel was analyze using MP-AES to assess the effect of roasting and time. The result indicates that roasted ore is yielding a higher nickel and cobalt extraction than the unroasted ore. The result indicated that 2 M concentration and 2 h leaching time on the roasted ore resulted in the highest nickel extraction reaching approximately 86%. The result showed the potential of roasting to improve the nickel extraction in atmospheric leaching.
