This study investigates the potential applicability of a glycine (Gly)-based stepwise leaching strategy for the selective dissolution of lead (Pb), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) from seafloor hydrothermal ore. Glycine, a non-toxic and biodegradable amino acid, was used as the leaching agent, and a series of shaking flask experiments were conducted under both alkaline and acidic conditions to evaluate individual leaching behaviors. Under alkaline conditions, Pb was completely dissolved within one hour when H2O2 was added to the Gly system, indicating its potential use as a pre-treatment step for selective Pb removal. Following this, acidic Gly leaching was examined for Cu and Zn extraction. In the acidic Gly system, leaching efficiencies of 50% for Cu and 65% for Zn were achieved. The addition of NaCl enhanced Cu dissolution, while its effect on Zn remained minimal. Instead, the addition of H2O2 in the acidic Gly system promoted almost complete dissolution of both Cu and Zn due to oxidative enhancement. These preliminary results suggest that Gly-based stepwise leaching may offer a feasible approach for improving metal separation in the hydrothermal ore processing. Further studies are underway to validate the sequential leaching performance.
