[S09] Risk assessment of nanomaterials and future challenges

Sat. Mar 26, 2022 1:30 PM - 3:30 PM [Room D] Conference Room 141+142 (Bldg. 1: 4F)

Organizer: Akihiko Hirose (NIHS), Akiko Ohno (NIHS)

In recent years, the global market scale of nanomaterials has been increasing year by year, and there is a wide range of demand for their use in daily life. In response to the growing international need for risk assessment of concern due to nanomaterials exposure, evaluation methods are being developed in a direction that extends the existing framework for risk assessment and management of chemicals. In 2019, nanomaterials will become a full-fledged subject of the European REACH registration system, and the development and improvement of OECD test method guidelines are being promoted at a rapid pace, mainly in Europe, and international cooperation on the safety of nanomaterials is also being promoted in Japan. From the toxicological point of view of nanomaterials, there are concerns about biological effects due to the significant influence of physical properties on bioaccumulation and surface activity, but standardized evaluation methods have not yet been established. In this symposium, we will invite experts in the fields of in vivo/in vitro/in silico evaluation to give lectures on the current status of toxicity evaluation methods for nanomaterials using various approaches.
