[S34] Accelerate new drug development by imitating the biological environment in micro-space -the cutting edge of MPS from Japan-

Sun. Mar 27, 2022 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM [Room E] Reception Hall (Bldg. 1: 4F)

Organizer: Daiju Yamazaki (NIHS), Seiichi Ishida (Faculty of Biotech. and Life Sci., Sojo Univ.)

MPS (Microphysiological System) is a cell and tissue culture system that reproduces biogenic organ-to-organ interactions in vitro by connecting organ compartments that mimic the physiological environment of various organs in micro-spaces. There are some problems in drug discovery such as an increase in new drug development costs and an uncertainty of human prediction due to human-animal species differences. It is expected that the development of MPS will help solve these problems. In Japan, the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED) project "Project Focused on Developing Key Evaluation Technology Aiming at Industrialization of Regenerative Medicine: Development of Platform Technology for Drug Discovery through Application of Regenerative Medicine" started in FY2017. The project has begun in earnest in MPS research and development. We planned a symposium in which researchers leading the development of MPS in Japan will present and explain their recent research results from the perspectives of device development, enterohepatic circulation, and blood brain barrier (BBB). Furthermore, researcher from pharmaceutical company will present proposal of the direction of future MPS technology development. We would like to discuss the utilization of MPS in drug discovery application in Japan.
