The novel coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic has been deeply impacted us in whole world since 2019. To conquer the Covid-19, it is essential to gather research force by a variety of experts in all pharmaceutical sciences, not solely by virologists and vaccine-drug developers. Here, the Antiviral Research Frontier group holds a symposium session entitled "challenges toward control of viral infections and diseases in broad pharmaceutical sciences" and introduce unique research topics from broad research fields including synthetic chemistry, drug development, public health and virology. Currently, there is a real need for extensive research and development on viral infections and diseases in social and medical settings. Nevertheless, it is likely to give insufficient contributions by pharmaceutical science society in Japan. Therefore, we now need to stimulate our researches on the virus infection and diseases in the pharmaceutical science fields as well. We hope this session helps bringing novel ideas as well as stimulating individual researches on viral infections and diseases broadly in pharmaceutical fields. These challenges will provide fundamental bases to further strengthen our viral infection control and expertise against emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases in future.
