[16B-T5-02] Towards Innovation in Sintering and Forming of Oxide Ceramics by a Strong Electric Field/Current-assisted Techniques
Keywords:flash sintering, flash event, creep, superplasticity, joining
It has been widely accepted that diffusional mass transport in oxide ceramics can be accelerated by applying a strong electric field directly to the ceramic body at an elevated temperature. In particular, flash event, in which atomic diffusion is highly enhanced under an electric field and temperature beyond a threshold condition, can be utilized not only to rapid sintering densification but also to superplastic forming and joining of oxide ceramics. We have demonstrated that an electric field/current athermally accelerates the superplastic forming and joining in oxide ceramics such as tetragonal ZrO2 ceramics. In the present paper, we will summarize our recent results on the acceleration of mass transport and plastic deformation in oxide ceramics at high temperatures by employing flash event.
