[MS3-2C-1] Cerebral Palsy Overview

Mohamad A. Mikati (Duke University School of Medicine, USA)

Cerebral Palsy (CP) refers to a group of permanent, non- progressive motor disorders (tone, movement, and posture), causing activity limitation, that result from injury to or maldevelopment of the fetal or infant brain. Often, but not always, accompanied by abnormalities of cognition, sensation, communication, and behavior and by epilepsy and by secondary musculoskeletal problems. Recent developments have improved not only our classification of CP but also its management and prevention. Current research with advanced MRI techniques including high resolution DTI and ongoing stem cell transplantation may lead to even more powerful diagnostic and therapeutic options.
