[P1-54] Saikokaryukotsuboreito as a First Choice for Benign Epilepsy of Children with Centro-Temporal EEG Foci (BECCT)

Eiji KURIHARA (Department of Neuropediatrics, Tokyo Metropolitan Neurological Hospital, Japan)

[Introduction] Benign Epilepsy of Children with Centro-Temporal EEG Foci (BECCT) has good prognosis and so treatment is unnecessary in some cases, but there exists also a treatment-resistant case group. In addition, cognitive-behavioral problems of BECCT have been attracting attention in recent years, and there are some reports suggesting their relationship to EEG abnormality. On the other hand, side effects of first-line drug CBZ, such as allergy, auditory abnormalities, sleepiness, are not rare and patients and family are very worry about them. I have experienced some epilepsy cases Saikokaryukotsuboreito was very effective without side effects, so tried to treat BECCT with this formula.
[Method] Saikokaryukotsuboreito was used for 8 patients with BECCT, 3 males and 5 females, aged 6-9 years (mean 7.7).
[Result & Conclusion] Using this formula, 5 of 8 cases were effective (seizure free for over 1 year) and 3 cases were not. All cases had no side effect. Saikokaryuukotsuboreito is a Japanese traditional medicine, originated in China, had been used for epilepsy of children in Edo period (17th-19th century). This formula includes crude drugs with anti-inflammatory action and has anticonvulsant effect mainly through GABA system. This formula should be considered as a candidate of the first choice of therapeutic drug for BECCT.
