With the declaration adopted at the 1990 World Conference on Education for All (EFA), non-formal education has come to be seen as important not only as a complement to formal education but also as part of lifelong learning to meet the basic learning needs of adults and vulnerable groups in society. Based on the hypothesis that the need for non-formal education and its role may be changing as the net enrollment rate in primary education in Thailand increases, this study was conducted in the Klong Toey area based on semi-structured interviews. The results of the study revealed that non-formal education in the area not only complements formal education but also plays an important role in strengthening ties between communities and promoting social participation. Specifically, it was confirmed that non-formal education facilities function as a “place to be” or “second home” for children, providing them with role models to help them establish their identity and emotional support. It was also found that they enhance mental well-being through hobbies and interaction with friends, and also serve as a lubricant that enables social participation. Thus, non-formal education in the Klong Toey area plays a role in improving the quality of life of learners by being flexible and responsive to local characteristics and needs. It is hoped that the continuation and development of this type of education will contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the future.
