[1F12] [Invited] Low-dimensional assembling of iron-aqua complexes for designing post-TiO2
Keywords:iron-aqua complex, nanoporous silicas, green rust
We demonstrate that fleeting dimeric aqua–Fe(III) species can be stabilised using a mesoporous silica/layered silicates to produce a photocatalyst/UV absorber whose performances exceed (are comparable to) that of a benchmark TiO2 nanoparticle. We also report that an exceptional type of green rust, which is considered as two-dimensional assembling of aqua-Fe(II)/Fe(III) complexes and previously thought to be very instable against oxidation, shows high oxidation stability and good photocatalytic activity comparable to that of a benchmark TiO2 nanoparticle. These materials are expected as alternatives to TiO2 nanoparticles, which are widely used but not ideal from a human safety perspective.
