Concentrator at Copper Mountain Mine, located in southern British Columbia, Canada has been improving its operation and production since it was commissioned in May 2011. Installation of three 1.7m x 2.9m Direct Flotation Reactors was successfully completed on schedule and budget in July 2020. The objectives were to upgrading concentrate grade, de-bottlenecking cleaner flotation and dewatering circuit with recent increase of throughput, and also preparation for further mill expansion project which will bring plant capacity to 45,000 tonnes per day from the current 40,000 tonnes per day.

The Direct Flotation Reactor (DFR) is the next generation of the Staged Flotation Reactor (SFR) currently being supplied by Woodgrove Technologies. The SFR was a step change in flotation technology where the various components of the flotation process were partitioned out and optimized, resulting in higher performance while reducing unit sizes and footprint. The DFR returns to a single vessel design, however, carrying in the SFR concept and is designed to optimize mixing, froth mobility and utilization of air and wash water. The feature of DFR is that the cells are fully enclosed and concentrate grade is controlled with control valves of concentrate flows as well as its small footprint and low operational cost.

During spring in 2019, a pilot plant was brought to site and total eleven tests were conducted for cleaner testing with sample taken from the flotation circuit at concentrator. The test results concluded that concentrates could show averaged 7.7% and 8.9% higher copper grades when DFR was operated as first and second cleaner flotation respectively, compared to the parallel conventional bench tests.
At the commissioning of DFR, the improvement of copper concentrate grade was instantaneously observed and successfully upgrade copper grade in final concentrate from 23.4% to 27.3% when it compared between two-months average of pre and post the installation.
