[2I06] Dissociation of biomolecules in liquid environments by fast heavy-ion irradiation

The effect of liquid environment on fast heavy-ion radiation damage of biomolecules was studied to understand DNA damage by ionizing radiation at the atomic level. Microjets of biomolecular aqueous solutions under vacuum were irradiated by fast heavy ions. Reaction products were analyzed by TOF-SIMS. We found that multiply dissociated fragments were suppressed. This suppression is caused by the energy dispersion to numerical water molecules surrounding the biomolecular solutes.
