Platinum nanoparticles with a high catalytic activity and durability are required as catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in polymer electrolyte fuel cells. In this study, we carried out electrochemical measurements to evaluate the ORR activity and durability of the Pt nanoparticles on an ion-beam-irradiated carbon support. Pt nanoparticles on the irradiated support were found to have a higher activity and durability than those on the non-irradiated support.
