(24)Evaluation of compressive strength of melted-solidified ceramics by damage mechanics finite element analysis

The compressive fracture strength of the melted and solidified ZrO2-Al2O3 eutectic ceramics and its dependency on the porosity were investigated by the finite element analyses. The material properties of the bulk material was numerically evaluated based on the result of nanoindentation test and used in the fracture simulations. The three-dimensional shape of pores in the aluminum casting obtained in the past experiment was alternatively used for the geometrical modeling of the porosity in the melted-solidified specimens. The fracture strength was evaluated by the finite element method employing the damage mechanics model tuned for the brittle fracture.
