It is becoming increasingly important to understand the mechanisms of hardening and embrittlement of materials due to irradiation, and to clarify their effects on the fracture behaviors of materials, amidst the aging of nuclear reactors and the development of fusion power generation.
In this study, molecular dynamics simulations of crack propagation were performed to simulate fracture at the atomic level, and the results were compared with the Griffith condition in fracture mechanics, as a first step to quantitatively evaluate the influence of nano-scale structural changes in materials upon crack propagation.
