For the countermeasure to mitigate the impact of accidents under excessive seismic events beyond the design assumption, a concept of passive-safety structure has been proposed. In the passive-safety concept, minor failures which have small impact on the structural safety may be acceptable when they can prevent the progress of the accident which cause fatal failure. Taking the piping systems as an example, the passive-safety concept can be realized by causing support failure prior to piping system’s boundary failure. To examine this concept, shaking table test on small-bore hole piping system model with multiple supports was conducted. The feasibility of passive-safety concept on piping systems under seismic events is discussed based on the experimental results.
