[3G06] On electric power balance in deuterium-deuterium start-up of fusion DEMO reactor
Keywords:the fusion DEMO reactor, DD start-up, plasma current drive, fuel circulation, electric power balance
Since tritium is scarce, securing the initial load of tritium is an important issue. One of the solutions is “DD start-up”, a fusion DEMO start-up operation in which the DEMO is start with deuterium-deuterium reaction. However, it takes about 60 days to get positive electrical output and an investment of electric power is required to maintain the temperature and the plasma current. In this study, the electric power balance in the DD start-up is simulated by the system dynamics. As a result, energy which needs to drive required plasma current decreases from about 150 MW (start) to about 60 MW (steady state). The effect of the direct recycling and small amount of initial load of tritium are also evaluated.
