[LS3-1C-1] Epilepsy in Childhood: The Current Challenges

Surachai Likasitwattanakul (Division of Neurology, Department of Pediatrics, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand
)

Seizure and epilepsy are common neurological disorders in childhood. Several challenges exist in both diagnostic and management in children with epilepsy. There are several non-epileptic events that sometimes misdiagnosed as epileptic seizures during this age especially in infancy.
Classification of epileptic seizures and epilepsies are constantly updated with the advances knowledge of neurobiology of seizure and epilepsies. Correct diagnoses of epileptic seizure or epileptic syndrome direct the appropriate treatment options and possible prognosis.
With the increasing knowledge regarding genetic and the whole-genome sequencing technology, many new epilepsy genes have been discovered. This knowledge may influence the treatment options from generally use of AEDs to more precise, targeted therapy of some specific genetic or epileptic syndromes.
This symposium will highlight the clinical characteristics of common epileptic seizures and epileptic syndromes as well as non-epileptic events. We will also discuss and review about the appropriate use and benefits of genetic studies that may have management implications.
