[MS7-3C-1] Cranial Ultrasonography: Its Usefulness and Progress

Ko Ichihashi (Department of Pediatrics, Saitama Medical Center Jichi Medical University, Japan)

Cranial ultrasonography is a non-invasive bedside examination and now it plays an important role of detection and management of neonatal disease. It is useful not only for morphological diagnosis by B-mode, but also for assessment of circulatory condition by Doppler method.
However, there is little objectivity in the examinations, which is one of the weak points of ultrasonography, because an examiner freely decides a direction of a plane. To solve this weak point, we have proposed 4 sagittal and 4 coronal basic planes which are used in the examinations. These planes give the examinations objectivity and everyone can easily understand the images. In this lecture, I will show you these 8 basic planes and some clinical cases diagnosed by B-mode. Then, I will show you the useful method of Doppler mode.
According to the development of engineering, new images or new methods are being tried. I will also show you three new techniques.
1.3D cranial ultrasonography is useful for the following reasons; 1) It easily produces a three-dimensional structure of the central nervous system, especially the ventricles, 2) It allows images of any section, which in the past could not be scanned, and 3) It permits measurement of volumes.
2. Analysis of RF (radiofrequency) signals may be useful for the detection of abnormal lesion.
3.The images of Fly Thru method are views from a point moving through a body cavity, and enable observers to look the inside of ducts.
