[P1-10] Quantitative Evaluation of handwriting skills during childhood

Yusuke Watanabe (Graduate School of Health Sciences, Kobe University, Japan)

[Background] Many children with neurodevelopmental disorders are suffering from clumsiness. Handwriting is a very important skill for the school-aged children. A lot of studies have been tried to develop the method for evaluating handwriting skills quantitatively, however, the gold standard method has not been established.
[Purpose] The purpose of our study was to develop a new quantitative assessing method of handwriting skills in order to clarify the developmental changes in pre-school aged and school aged children.
[Method] One hundred ninety nine children aged from 4 to 12 years old and 20 young adults participated in this study. They were asked to draw a line carefully between the two parallel lines with an electronic pen, Pressure during drawing and distance from the center point of parallel lines were monitored integrally using originally developed computer software.
[Result] Depending on the age, the average pressure increased until 7 years old, and afterward it sustained at as almost same level of adults. The distance from the center points was similarly reduced until 7 years old, and afterward it also remained in the same level.
[Conclusion] The handwriting skills seemed to be almost matured by the age of 7-8 years old. Children more than 8 years showed handwriting skills of almost same as adults. The method we developed in this study was expected to be useful as a tool for detecting clumsy children.
