[P1-106] Clinical characteristics and outcomes of children with non-convulsive status epilepticus: Case series

Thitiporn Fangsaad (Department of Pediatrics, Bhumubol Adulyadej Hospital, Bangkok, Thailand)

Purpose: To explore clinical characteristics, treatment and outcomes of NCSE in children with alteration of consciousness in Bhumiboladulyadej Hospital.
Method: A prospective observational study was conducted in children with altered consciousness admitted to the intensive care units from September 1st, 2014 to September 30th, 2016. Standard 10-20 cEEG monitoring was applied. Clinical data and outcomes were collected for analysis.
Results: Among 20 children presenting with altered consciousness, there were 5 children who had NCSE. Their etiologies were varied. All had convulsive seizures either prior to or during EEG monitoring. Two had subtle clinical seizures consisting of intermittent cyanosis, nystagmus, changing in blood pressures and heart rates. Duration of cEEG monitoring varied from 14 to 256 hours. Three had EEG-monitor more than one time. Duration of NCSE varied from several minutes to a few days. All had epileptiform discharges. EEG findings were multifocal electrographic seizures with slowing or isoelectric background. The regimen with Phenobarbital was noted to be effective for seizure-control, once NCSE was diagnosed. One patient died. The rests had various disabilities determined at one month after the diagnosis of NCSE. These outcomes varied to the etiology individually.
Conclusion: Continuous EEG monitoring has a role in identifying NCSE, which is applied in clinical management. It might have effect to the initial outcome but not to the ultimate outcome, which mainly influenced by the etiology. Further study in large number of subjects is yet in need.
